I've never understood the love that some of my fellow liberals give folks like Castro, Mao, etc. But a friend of mine said something that I can appreciate: "We don't have to endorse his actions to understand Fidel Castro was a fascinating icon. Amazing accomplishments. Just wrong goals."

Here is the Human Rights Watch summary of his record for five decades of killing, repression, surveillance, beatings, arbitrary detention, economic stagnation, mass flight, propaganda, punishment of journalists, forced re-education of gays... the list of offenses just goes on and fuckin' on...

They loved him. Like they loved the murderous Che. I'm pretty sure it's because they are subject to exactly the same type of "big man" persuasion they pretend to hate so well in Trump. Once persuaded you will excuse everything, even murder.

I think he IS a fascinating character...much like other tyrants. That doesn't mean you AGREE with them.

And we've had the communism discussion before...like many systems, it has good ideas, but in theory, works for shit.
