Raising a turkey
We got what I supposed was a chicken, standing in the middle of the road, about 2 months ago. It's appearance has gradually become more turkey-like since about a month ago. Finally, today it was confirmed by a neighbor's mother who used to raise turkeys. So I guess we are now the proud owners of a turkey that will never grace our dinner table, thanks to my squeamish nature, and my sensitive, animal loving 12 year old. So I am just wondering if any cellarites have ever raised a turkey? What am I in for? Apparently the eggs are edible, anyway.

I'm still deciding on whether to have turkey or pork for Christmas. I'm leaning towards pork. Takes so much less time to cook.
I'd just make sure it's a female turkey before I went eating any 'eggs' from the back end if I were you. ![]()

Don't tell your kid but we're actually slaughtering turkeys at my uncles farm today. I'm thinking of starting a heritage flock here as a depression (economic) buffer. Your turkey may not live long if it is a factory style meat production bird. They get heavier and heavier until their heart gives out.

Bink, if it's like a chicken, it'll eat anything. Weeds, stale bread, fruit peels, whatever you've got leftover for dinner, etc.

We deep fry our turkey's down here. I never did it before moving south, but it is not greasy at all and is some of the most moist meat you have ever had. It is the best thing you could do with a turkey after you fatten it up.
