Help Name the Cat
Hi. Tonight, I found a kitten in a parking lot where my mother lives. It walked right up to me and started purring and asking for love. I'm a sucker for animals, especially the loving variety. No one reported it missing, and it was clearly starving. It's very cold out, and had I not taken it inside, it would have become coyote fodder in short shrift, and I would never be able to live with myself.
Tonight it is at my mom's house, well fed, warm and safe. She cannot keep it, though. To be quite honest, I was not looking to get another cat but if The Flying Spaghetti Monster decided to put one in my life, well, who am I to thumb my nose at His Noodlyness? But until this kitten gets a clean bill of health from the vet tomorrow, I won't risk exposing my two senior cats--both of whom are on chemotherapy--to anything that might further jeopardize their well being. But assuming the best scenario, I'll be bringing him, her or it home tomorrow. That brings us to the current topic: Naming the cat. My current two cats are Mitzvah (means "a good deed" or a blessing in Hebrew) and Mazel (means "luck" in Hebrew). But this all black kitten was found on CHRISTMAS DAY. I certainly cannot name a soon-to-be-Jewish cat with a Xtian name. Some suggestions so far have included naming it Yontiff (means "holiday" in Hebrew) and call it Yanni for short. Another friend suggested that since I found the cat this evening, I name the cat Merry, but spell it M-e-r-i instead. So, Dwellars, I'm taking suggestions. Here's a lousy picture or two of the kitteh in question. All black, relatively short hair. Gold eyes. Long tail. Still don't know the sex. Quite talkative and full of purrs. Suggestions?

Gawd we just went thru this. After a week we decided to just put potential names in a hat and drew one.
Not knowing the sex makes it tough. Pat? Terry? Jamie? Chris? Shannon?

Out of the names you posted: I vote Yanni.
Jebus would be a really funny name tho, I like it.

I, too, vote for Jesus/Jebus. If you don't want to be caught calling "Jee-zusss!" out your door when it's time for kitties to eat, you could go with the Hispanic "Hey-Soos" instead.

Having spent many years at a Jewish prep school, I can give you some names. Most of these are people I want to school with. The site I'm linking has lists by origin for Hebrew or Biblical names. Girls Shira = song http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...ame_Shira.html Shari = http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...ame_Shari.html Rena = http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...name_Rena.html (there's also a Greek definition) Adina = http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...ame_Adina.html or this http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...ame_Adina.html. Why there are two meanings confuses me, unless by 'biblical' they mean Aramaic. Boys The standbys are common biblical names like Rueben, Joshua, David, Daniel. Less common nowadays are biblical names like Ezra (as in the poet Ezra Pound, who was allegedly anti-semitic). Ishmael is good since it has a popular literary tie-in. So does Silas and Ichabod. Ezekiel is a powerful name, but it's has a classy sound. http://www.babynamesfamily.com/meani...e_Ezekiel.html There's another name that I always though was unusual and kind of cool. It wasn't Ichabod but it had the same crotchety sound to it. I just can't remember it.

You could name him "FSM", and pronounce it as Fuzzim.

Cats are made of meat, Fleischig?
Or, since you have a Mazel, what about Tov? His gold eyes kind of stand out like stars in the night sky, eh?
