I can remember The Weathermen and Black Panthers, but does it seem more typical that conservatives, when faced with opposition, tend to resort to violence more than liberals? I can't recall many examples of liberal violence since 1980. Am I suffering from selective memory?

The left in the US seems to stick to property destruction for the most part. I guess I'm thinking of radical enviros, PETA, and the anti-fracking folks. I'd say the poison mail crowd is limited to a few unbalanced folks, but there are probably huge numbers of right-wingers who would shoot back if their property rights were violated. I've got a neighbor hoarding ammunition right now and I'm starting to wonder about his rationality. Don't blame country people though, this guy got scared of the other and moved up here from the city.

Ooh, that can backfire. He was raised in the city or burb, with lots of people around. Develops a fear of half of "them", and escapes to the country without realizing he was kind of depending on the other half of "them" for mutual protection.
Now every bump in the night is unfamiliar, and a threat. Paranoia grows faster than the ammo pile. Hey, that bump could be the government, too. Why was the mailman loitering by the box? That's not the right UPS brown. Honey, did you break the seal on the new jar of peanut butter? ![]()

OK, at that level you can include the "tree huggers" of the Pacific NW,
who climbed into trees to prevent lumber companies from clear-cutting old-growth timber. There were a couple of incidents of heavy logging equipment being vandalized. Strangely, when the tree huggers came down the day the issue was being heard in court, that night the tree was mysteriously "ringed" by a chain saw to kill it. |

Would you consider Unabomber Kazinski to be left wing/liberal?
Personally, I'm wondering if it might be time for some militant radical liberalism. The hypocrisy and ruthlessness of theistic plutocracy makes it invulnerable to rational criticism. Where words fail, we must resort to sticks and stones.

Depending on how far back you want to go in US history,
there was John Brown and his raid on Harper's Ferry in an attempt to trigger a uprising against slavery. That one didn't work out too well. Then depending on your definitions of liberal, etc. there was the "union movements" such as the Molly McQuires in the coal mines of Pennsylvania, etc. And many of the union strikes against management of various industries in the 19th and 20th centuries turned to violence (by one side or the other) But I would not really consider the union strikes in the same categories as today's liberal politics and social issues. |
