I want to start a rumor just for the Republicans...

Facing threat in Congress, Pentagon races to resettle Guantanamo inmates

Facing a potential showdown with Congress, the Pentagon is racing to move dozens of detainee
out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in coming months before lawmakers can block future transfers
and derail President Obama’s plan to shutter the U.S. military prison.

As a first step, officials plan to send up to 10 prisoners overseas, possibly in June.
In all, the Pentagon hopes that 57 inmates who are approved for transfer will be resettled
by the end of 2015. That would require “large muscle movements” by at least two countries,
which officials hope will each agree to take in 10 to 20 Yemeni detainees,
who cannot be repatriated because of security conditions in their war-torn homeland.

In the event that Congress does pass legislation that would freeze Guantanamo Bay’s population,
currently at 122, White House officials are exploring options for the unilateral
closure of the prison and moving detainees into the United States,
an action that Congress has opposed from the president’s first months in office.

OBAMA TO TRADE GUANTANEMO PRISION TO CUBA
1) Remove Cuba from the list of terrorist states
2) Sign over Guantanemo Prison to Cuban government
Case closed - as promised in 2008

We got Guantanamo Bay Naval Station from Cuba in return for giving them the rest of Cuba, liberated from Spain, after the Spanish-American war.

Gitmo is key to our fleet operations in the Caribbean, as a training base and as a resupply point.

I can almost see or President doing this to cripple the Navy further, as well as once again thumb his nose at our established policies and protocols which have governed us up until he assumed office.

Cuba isn't far enough away to provide extra coverage. A base on actual US soil would be better unless the training and resupplying involves breaking US law.

In which case, a base on actual US soil would still be better - even more so.

we already did that once ,
On ship for 6 months ( in the USMC ) we were going towards Perth Aus ,
we said AC|DC was going to be in Sydney ,
there were 5 ships in our flotilla,
about a week before we got there Battalion passed the word that Flights to Sydney were OUT of the question , and AC|DC were in Europe .
Folks from all 5 ships had picked up on the rumor !!
it was EPIC !!!!
Oh and the expeditionary medals we were supposed to get for being the first millatery ship to dock in Penang Malisa didn't happen eater ( the USS Enterpise had just left )

Didja hear, Congress has authorized the release of any Guantanamo detainee who undergoes a voluntary sex change operation. Manning paved the way for funding.
