Brace-face

Ok, so I'm going to be 28 on the 26th, but I just got my first set of braces yesterday. So far, THEY SUCK. I basically feel like someone punched me in the mouth. My lips are protruding and everything is sore. Eating is great fun. I picked tortilla out of my braces for about 30 mins last night. Gross. And on top of it all, I got the clear ones, so I have to avoid a TON of foods and drinks that can stain them. SUCK. Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I am going through this for more than cosmetic reasons. My top jaw is all screwy and they're trying to correct it with braces to avoid BREAKING MY FRIGGIN' JAW and resetting it. ACK. But after the braces, I may still need surgery. No good.

Sympathize with me... please.

I've had braces. I've had oral surgery.

If they can do it without braces at all, just surgery, that's the option you really want. Sure, it's goddamn painful for a while. But it's better than years of braces (I think I had mine for about 5 years... ugh. And they still didn't work properly, because my teeth are damn stubborn and my retainer actually came apart in my mouth, not that my orthodontist cared)

sorry for the pain chainsaw.. russotto tell me more please.

i couldn't have braces when i was younger due to sports, then the military. so now at 30 i'm tired of crooked teeth and want to fix them. i don't want to have braces for the next couple of years... it doesn't exactly instill confidence in a 60 year old couple to see their financial advisor still has braces on. i have a friend who got a bit lippy and left his front teeth in a bar one night. he had posts put in and has absolutely perfect chompers, i like that idea. but, is it worth the pain? how long before your mouth is back to relatively normal? time off work?

Give it 2-3 days, chainsaw, and you'll feel fine. both my boys went thru this and after couple days I heard no complaints. After the braces come off, though, you're teeth will be so smooth feeling they will feel like slime! Yikes!

That should read "Give it 2-3 days after each tightening..."

I hated those days.

Ugh, the worst was those interconnected bands. The nurses would brace my head while the dentist yanked and yanked and pulled and yanked and pulled the fucker into place. Ugh.

At least you won't go hungry - a nice midnight snack is always waiting there for you. If you can pick it out with your tongue.

You never know, you might just remind them of their Johnny's little Mikey who just finished grade 9 and is so bright and talented and trustworthy and has a great future ahead of him

chainsaw, braces are damn hot. No, seriously. "Hey, there's a guy/girl who doesn't give a damn about what those highschool jock morons think about braces." :four-eyed in-love smiley:
