Ads on the internet, as far as I can see, have progressive got more and more annoying, and underhand, and for the life of me, I can’t work out how the FUCK tricking me into clicking on a ad that tells me I’m going to get $20 if I hit the monkey, as well as gigs of free porn, an XBOX, revive my credit rating and fee pills that will add 18 meters to my penis before taking me to a site selling custom made female hygiene products is supposed to endear me enough to the company to buy anything. The logic behind those fake message box ads is just as bad "hey, lets piss off our would-be customers so much that though the tears of frustration at trying to reach the site they wanted, the buy our product by mistake!" As a result the concept of the internet running on advertising has failed miserably and every second site is closing or going payment only. WHEN THE FUCK WILL THEY LEARN THAT YOU NEED TO TARGET YOUR ADS TO THE RIGHT DEMOGRAPHIC FUCKWITS.

For refrence, if UT wanted ot put slashdot-style ads at the top that were targeted i'd have no problem ckicking them every now and then to help pay for this site.

*shrugs* Those sites have to make their money somehow. Although, I don't care for them myself...ESPECIALLY pop-up ads. Those piss me off to no end.

If it ever gets that bad, I think most of us would cheerfully send bags of cash to UT, in order to prevent that very thing.

but syc, they aren't getting paid because the ads don't work, and so the sites are closing down, but the ads don't wok becuase they are fucking stupid. In other words, every dumbass that went into marketing - is now runing the internet.

And yes Hubris Boy, i'd rather he just set up a paypal/whatever account too.

Perhaps. The marketers probably do test groups and all that shit before putting the ads on there though...they probably test them on AOL users.

They have a free trial Pop-Up Stopper download that's worth a try. The licensed version has more features, but the basic free deal works great.

Mozilla has a line you can add to prefs.js that will disable all popups on onload & onunload. It's really handy, and I never have a problem with popups on my main boxen now. Seriously. I still get popups from MSNBC when I click a link or whatever - that all still works. But those annoying popup ads are gone. Woohoo!

Mozilla will have a box in the preferences section with the next milestone release, so there'll be no more having to mess with the prefs file.

The only ads that would preserve the site here would be small, under 3K in size, and would probably be for my own benefit to try to build up my own business to recoup some of the bandwidth costs. Y'see I'd be trying to encourage you folks with web development budgets - or who can influence web development budgets - to use me for your web projects.

But I have no ulterior motive in getting to that point, it'd just be to recoup the costs.

I"m part of a group looking at developing a concept.
The idea is, we have a huge list (and we already do) of very small charities and volenteer organisation worldwide doing all sorts of valuable work in all sorts of fields, who don't have the ability to put large ads on prime time TV in the US like world vision and the like. We want to develop a site that allows people with a concioince and some spare cash to donate nad talk to these organisations. We'd be looking for hosting, Perl/PHP with a MySQL backend, mabye a secure payment system down the track.
What do people think of the idea to start with: would you pay if you could find an organisation that did exactly what you are passionate about? Would you trust the site? What kind of evidence would you need? We would be able to provide webpages, e-mail, phone/fax number, and postal adresses (a mix of the above, depending on the group) for each.

As i've probably mentioned before, i'm affiliated with people at Taking It Global, and thinking about getting the backing of the melbourne team (who i'm good firends with) to pull this off, what thougts do you have?

So what you're talking about is a site that's set up to receive payments and forward them to charities?

I'd do it if I were sure that the payments would go toward said charity.

As a website operator, let me offer you some advice:

-Bandwidth costs a ton of fucking money for any type of decent connection on a box you have control over. Of course you can get decent bandwidth at some place for $20 a month, but you don't have the control that you probably want.

-You want at least 1 box, probably 2. And not pieces of shit either - you want a very serious server. Not like a SunFire 10000 or something, but not a piece of shit that you tossed together - name brand shit, we're talking. You don't want hardware failures to ever happen. You also don't want software not working with the hardware right.

-Have someone you really trust running the show. They need to be able to fix something if it breaks, and they need to know how to not fuck up a box while browsing around as root.

A good place to look for the hosting is <a href="http://www.rackspace.com">Rackspace</a>. They're not cheap, but they're good. If you can get the money together, you could certainly swing it. The problem is, to pay for it, you'd want to collect a certain portion of donations. To do that, you need a lot of people to donate. To get that, you need a big audience. That's the hardest part.

I trust and know him, and we don't need something big to start off with. To start off with the site would be just a database, no payment system, so you can contact the gousp and donate to them directly, if it takes off (bit of advertising at slashdot mabye, classified on fark etc, then mabye we expand but start small for now.

I could run it off free hostnig, but its too unrelaible.

It sounds like Convio which is the big player in the US in this space, if that's what you're talking about.

In Canada, there is a firm called HJC that is a smaller outfit, doing things a bit differently in the same space, but with national non profits.

In any case, you either know of these, or might like to take a look.
