For a hick from the sticks it took luck to get to Washington.
While the war was escalating he was lucky not to lose the capital and capitol. From what I've read about Mary he was lucky to get shot.

This chart says as of 10 years ago 29.2 miles a year for each inhabitant of the US. I know a shitload of people who ride zero so somebody is out there riding a awful lot of miles.

Road riding in the US is suicidal. It's too bad because places like the Finger Lakes are amazing to ride and sight see.
